Trump Dominates CPAC Presidential Straw Poll
ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN NEWS) – Former President Donald Trump topped the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC)’s straw poll Sunday, in which conservatives picked who they would support in a GOP presidential primary in 2024.
59 percent of CPAC 2022 attendees said they would vote for Trump if the 2024 Republican primary were held today.
Florida governor Ron DeSantis trailed in distant second with 28 percent of the vote while former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo came in even farther third at two percent.
To be clear, this straw poll only covered the 2022 conference attendees and doesn’t represent the larger GOP electorate.
By comparison, though, it’s reported that Trump’s margin was smaller in CPAC’s straw poll last summer. In July 2021, Trump had won 70 percent of conference attendee votes to DeSantis’s 21 percent.
The poll also asked who the attendees would vote for if Trump decided not to run in 2024, and DeSantis ran away with the win at 61 percent. Pompeo and Donald Trump Jr. followed DeSantis in the latter scenario, each netting 6 percent of the vote.
Both Trump and DeSantis delivered speeches during the conference this week–DeSantis on opening day Thursday, and Trump on Saturday. But interestingly, neither Trump nor DeSantis mentioned each other during their speeches.
