ORLANDO, Fla. (FNN) – Over 500 families were helped with canned food, vegetables, oranges, and other free food at a drive at New Covenant Bible Fellowship Church on West Oak Ridge Road in Orlando Saturday, courtesy of State Representative Daisy Morales (D-Orlando), who partnered with local organizations Farm Share and Lady Storm Foundation to distribute the food.

Michael Ali, a retired Marine, was one of the first ones to come in and was quick to praise the efforts. “This is a wonderful church and group of people. I always come here and they always give out a helping hand,” he said.

Dolores Smith followed up, driving with her teenage son. “It’s been a struggle this last year. But people need to always know about these places. We have wanted for nothing thanks to events like this.”

Larry McCoy, waiting farther back in the line, said this was a lifeline to those who don’t have access to food stamps. “I’ve been out of work for most of this year. I used to work in a hotel. These events are terrific, they truly make a difference.”

Farm Share, a non-profit established in 1991, distributes fresh food to families in need. In 2020 they gave 136 million pounds of food to more than 23 million households all over Florida.

The Lady Storm Foundation works with underprivileged communities to provide food, clothes, and other basic needs in Florida.

“I’m seeing that we still have people that are not finding jobs, that still have insecurity in food. We’re trying to alleviate that strain, that stress in their life, for families with kids. No child should be left home without food,” Rep. Morales told Florida National News.
