State Rep. Daisy Morales Highlights Florida’s 1st Tool Time Sales Tax Holiday Starting Saturday

ORLANDO, Fla.  — Florida’s first Tool Time Sales Tax Holiday starts on Saturday, September 3, and runs for a week.

During the holiday, qualifying items commonly used by trade workers are exempt from sales tax. The tax holiday is part of House Bill 7071, the largest tax relief bill in Florida’s history, was co-sponsored by State Representative Daisy Morales and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis on May 6, 2022.

“This was the largest tax relief bill in our state’s history, and we’ve already seen several tax holidays from it,” State Rep. Daisy Morales told FNN News. “This first-ever Tool Time Tax Holiday is the latest one, and I strongly encourage Florida families and eligible businesses to take advantage of it. It’s a great opportunity to strengthen our Florida economy and a great way for people to save money on the tools they need to keep their lives and businesses moving forward as we build back better after the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Eligible Tool Time Tax Holiday Items

  • Selling for $25 or less per pair:
    • Work gloves

  • Selling for $50 or less per item:
    • Duffle bags
    • Hand tools
    • LED flashlights
    • Protective coveralls
    • Tote bags

  • Selling for $50 or less per pair (or the equivalent if sold in sets of more than one pair):
    • Safety glasses

  • Selling for $75 or less per item:
    • Toolboxes

  • Selling for $100 or less per item:
    • Electrical voltage and testing equipment
    • Shop lights
    • Tool belts

  • Selling for $125 or less per item:
    • Industry code books
    • Industry textbooks

  • Selling for $150 or less per item:
    • Drain opening tools
    • Handheld pipe cutters
    • Plumbing inspection equipment
    • Power tool batteries

  • Selling for $175 or less per pair:
    • Work boots

  • Selling for $300 or less per item:
    • Power tools
    • Toolboxes for vehicles

The holiday does not apply to rentals of any eligible items or to items bought within a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment or airport.

Three other sales tax holidays are currently underway in the state: Home hardening, diapers and clothing and energy star appliances.

Those holidays all started on July 1.

  • Diapers and clothing:
    • Run through June 30, 2023
    • Exempts sales tax on baby, toddler and children’s clothing for ages 5 and under
    • Exempts sales tax on children’s diapers (single use and reusable)

  • Home hardening:
    • Runs through June 30, 2024
    • Exempts sales tax on home hardening products like impact-resistant doors, windows and garage doors

  • Energy star appliances:
    • Runs through June 30, 2023
    • Exempts sales tax on items some qualifying Energy Star appliances
      • Washing machines, dryers and water heaters ($1,500 or less)
      • Refrigerators or combo fridges/freezers ($3,000 or less)
